NETWORKS What is a computer network? A network is an assemblage of various components: devices, hardware, software and service-level functionality. This collection of disparate parts is stitched together in such a way as to meet the specific operational needs of the company that employs it. Equipment is tied together by cabling and wiring. Signals of varying frequency and range travel along this wire to allow the equipment to communicate, and to allow the network to manage itself in a harmonious and functional way. The more complicated and disparate the pieces of equipment, the greater the challenge in establishing and managing this continually harmonious behavior atop this ranging collection of wire.
